I’ve folded a lot of sweaters in 11 years as a professional organizer! Let me show you the best, and easiest, ways to fold a sweater!

Why I don’t typically recommend file folding a sweater:

-Most people don't have enough drawer space to file fold sweaters. They are bulky and take up a lot of room, which could take up a lot of drawers. And then it's hard to keep track of what's in each drawer and you can't see all your options at one time. Plus, most dresser drawers I see (even ones built into closets) aren’t deep enough for bulky sweaters). It’s just a rare situation, but if you have the space and it works, go for it.

-The same goes for if you use baskets to file fold instead of drawers. It may take a lot of baskets. So file folding sweaters only works well if you don't have a lot of them and they can all fit in one container (basket or drawer).

-Some people file fold sideways on a shelf, so it looks like books lined up on a bookshelf. I just rarely encounter shelves that are that shallow that it would make sense to do that. AND the pocket fold method I show in this video can file or stack on shallow shelves. I think it generally looks better stacked than sideways file folding, but I’m not saying, “never”.

Some people call this the KonMari method (Marie Kondo), but file folding was a thing long before Kondo came on the scene. She does put her own spin on it and she made it popular, though. My method is a bit different and, like I mentioned before, a file fold isn't usually best for sweaters anyway.

How to make the most of a stack fold:

-Stacking your sweaters should only be done on a shelf, not in a drawer or basket. The whole point is you want to be able to see all your sweaters at one time and not have to dig to find something.

-Use additional shelves to separate stacks. I don't like to stack more than 4 high so that it's easy to get things in and out. Having lots of shelves helps with that (and you can get basic white melamine shelves cut inexpensively at Home Depot, so you can always add them in!).

-Color sort. I make sure all gray sweaters are grouped together, all pink together, all blue, etc. This way it's easy to see where you have abundance and where you have lack.
