I’ve organized a few homes lately that made me realize it’s time to talk about drawer organizers again.

As an organized person, and a professional in the industry, I often forget that some things that seem like a given to me are mind blowing to other people. Drawer dividers fall into that category often.

Here’s an example of what I mean.

scissors and spatulas in a drawer

Nevermind my shoe covers, but you can see what I mean. And here’s another, even more convincing, example.

At least this drawer is only knives, but I see drawers ALL THE TIME with knives, serving spoons, spatulas, rubberbands, etc all together with zero dividers. Personally, the possibility of slicing my finger open while I look for a toothpick is not the thrill I’m looking for in my daily life.

Utilizing containers (drawer dividers/drawer inserts/bins/trays/etc) not only keeps things in their place so I don’t have to hunt for anything, but they also decrease the likelihood of getting injured while reaching in a drawer.

Here’s what I did with these two drawers.

This client wanted room to grow. They had just moved in and knew they would acquire more spatulas, gadgets, knives, etc. So I divvied up the categories into separate drawers and left some empty drawer dividers for the client to utilize as needed.

You can find the bamboo dividers here (they also come in acacia, which I love!), and the in-drawer knife block here.

Here are some other drawers I organized in this kitchen.

I always recommend putting spice in drawers if you have the space! They’re so much easier to see in drawers than in cabinets. You can find this spice liner here. I prefer wooden options, so here’s a bonus link for you, just in case.

Pro tip: If you’re searching online for other options, try the terms “drawer organizer”, “drawer insert”, “drawer divider” for the best results.

Whatever products you choose, remember that the purpose of drawer dividers is to keep your categories separate and to keep them in place.

If you’re looking at these drawer dividers and thinking something like,

“But how do I know how many of each size I need?” or

“All my drawers are junk drawers.

How do I go from that to this? Where do I even start?”

I can help break it down for you.

Start Here.

Choosing drawer dividers is NOT the first step to getting organized. In fact, containers the LAST hands-on step.

If you’re starting from scratch, you’ll want to start from the beginning so that you don’t end up with a bunch of drawer dividers that don’t even work for your space.

I go over all this and more in my free video guide, Start Here: Learn To Organize Anything In Less Than 10 Minutes.

You can also check out this “oldie but a goodie” video I made about drawer organizers back in the day. I was taking a more use-what-you-have approach, but I think you’ll still get some good ideas!

Ahh. The good old days. Hope it made you smile and gave you some practical tips!
